Frequently asked questions

ITR (Income Tax Return) filing is the process of reporting your income, deductions and taxes paid to the Income Tax Department for a financial year. In India, you generally must file if your gross total income exceeds the basic exemption limit, or if you want to claim a refund of excess TDS, carry forward losses, or meet other prescribed conditions. Filing for AY 2026-27 covers income earned in FY 2025-26.

For most individual taxpayers (ITR-1 and ITR-2, non-audit), the due date to file the income tax return for AY 2026-27 (FY 2025-26) is 31 July 2026. If you miss it, you can usually file a belated return up to 31 December 2026 with applicable late fees and interest. Dates can change if the government issues an extension.

Sign in to IPO Ji and give your consent on the ITR filing page. You are then securely taken to the filing flow, where you choose your filing method and income sources, upload or auto-prefill your documents, review your computation, pay, file your return and e-verify it.

There are two ways to file: Do it yourself, which starts at ₹33, and Assisted by a CA, where a tax expert files for you, which starts at ₹881. Your exact price depends on your income sources and is shown before you pay.

The right ITR form depends on your income. ITR-1 (Sahaj) suits most salaried individuals; ITR-2 is for capital gains or more than one house property; ITR-3 is for business or professional income, including F&O trading; and ITR-4 (Sugam) is for presumptive business income. The filing flow picks the correct form for you based on the income sources you select.

Yes. Besides salary, you can file capital gains from shares, mutual funds and IPO listing gains, intraday and F&O trading income, crypto / virtual digital asset (VDA) income, house property and rent, and business or professional income. For complex cases, the CA-assisted option handles the computation for you.

Commonly you will need your PAN and Aadhaar, Form 16 from your employer, Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS), bank interest certificates, and capital-gains statements if you sold shares, mutual funds or property. Auto-prefill pulls in most of these to save time.

Yes. Apart from Do-it-yourself filing, you can choose "Assisted by a CA", where a tax expert prepares and files your return end-to-end, starting at ₹881. You pick your filing method right after you continue.

The old regime lets you claim deductions and exemptions such as 80C, HRA and home-loan interest, while the new regime offers lower slab rates but fewer deductions. The right choice depends on your income and eligible deductions — the filing flow helps you compare both and pick the one with lower tax.

E-verification confirms that the return you filed is genuine. It is mandatory — an ITR is not treated as valid until it is verified, generally within 30 days of filing. You can e-verify using Aadhaar OTP, net banking or other methods, and the filing flow guides you through it.

Once your return is filed and e-verified, the Income Tax Department processes it and credits any refund to your pre-validated bank account. You can track the refund status on the income tax e-filing portal using your PAN and the relevant assessment year; refunds typically arrive within a few weeks of processing.

Yes. If you miss the due date, you can file a belated return for AY 2026-27 up to 31 December 2026, subject to late fees under section 234F and interest on any unpaid tax. Filing on time is best, but a belated return is far better than not filing at all.

Filing is handled by our partner TaxBuddy and starts only after you give explicit consent on IPO Ji. You are connected through a secure, token-based single sign-on, and your details are used only to prepare and file your return.

You can get expert help responding to income-tax notices and clarifications, even after your return is filed. Notice support is available as part of the expert-assisted options.

The current filing season is AY 2026-27, which corresponds to income earned in FY 2025-26. You can also file pending or updated returns for earlier years where permitted.
